Japanese Set Directory

Gym Heroes introduced Gym Leader-themed Pokémon to the TCG, featuring cards named after iconic trainers like Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge, and Erika. Released in 2000, this set was the first to feature trainer-specific Pokémon variants. The larger card count and unique trainer theme make this one of the most distinctive sets in the vintage Japanese catalog.

Neo Genesis marked the debut of Generation II Pokémon in the TCG, introducing beloved Johto Pokémon including Lugia, Typhlosion, Feraligatr, and Meganium. Released in December 2000, this set bridged the original 151 Pokémon with the new Johto region. Lugia from this set is one of the most iconic and valuable cards in all of vintage Pokémon collecting.

The original Japanese Pokémon TCG release that started it all. Released in October 1996 exclusively in Japan, the Base Set introduced the world to Pokémon card collecting. Japanese Base Set cards are notably different from their English counterparts — they lack the 'Pokémon' copyright symbol, feature cleaner card backs, and were printed in smaller quantities. Holo cards from this set are among the most sought-after in all of Pokémon collecting.

The second Japanese Pokémon TCG expansion, Jungle introduced fan-favorite Pokémon from the Safari Zone and beyond. Released in June 1997, this set features some of the most beloved Pokémon designs including Scyther, Pinsir, Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon. The smaller card count compared to Base Set makes complete holo sets particularly desirable.

Released just two months after the original Base Set, Fossil introduced ancient and prehistoric Pokémon to the TCG. This set features some of the most iconic Pokémon in the hobby including Gengar, Lapras, Aerodactyl, and Articuno. The Fossil set's proximity to the Base Set release means it shares many of the same printing characteristics and collector appeal.

Team Rocket introduced the concept of 'Dark' Pokémon — corrupted versions of fan favorites controlled by the villainous Team Rocket organization. Released in 2000, this set features Dark Charizard, Dark Blastoise, and other iconic Dark-type variants. The set's unique aesthetic and the popularity of Team Rocket as antagonists make it a fan favorite.
